La fibra di alpaca è inserita all’interno della categoria delle fibre pregiate ed è tra le fibre migliori al mondo. La sua estrema finezza (che raggiunge in alcuni casi i 13 micron) è una delle sue caratteristiche più importanti e rappresentative (possiamo averne un'idea comparandola con la finezza media del capello umano, che si attesta tra i 40 e i 90 micron). 
La lana di alpaca rientra nella categoria “fibra” in quanto la sua struttura è molto più simile al pelo che non alla lana. Paragonata alla lana di pecora, la fibra di alpaca è al tatto molto più soffice, setosa e “asciutta”; questo deriva sia dalla differenza nella struttura fisica della fibra, sia dal fatto che la fibra di alpaca ha un bassissimo quantitativo di lanolina che la ricopre: grazie a questa caratteristica risulta essere più lucida e luminosa, qualità che vengono trasferite al filato e in seguito al prodotto finito, donando grande valore ai manufatti in fibra di alpaca; 22 sono i colori naturali riconosciuti ufficialmente per questa lana, ma in realtà le sfumature intermedie sono oltre il doppio; tale varietà consente di avere fibre colorate senza dover ricorrere a tinture (naturali o industriali), caratteristica molto importante in relazione alla crescente attenzione verso prodotti biologici, naturali ed ecosostenibili.

Compared to sheep's wool, alpaca fiber is much softer, silkier and "dryer" to the touch; this derives both from the difference in the physical structure of the fiber and from the fact that the alpaca fiber has a very low quantity of lanolin covering it: thanks to this characteristic it appears to be more shiny and luminous, qualities which are transferred to the yarn and subsequently to the finished product, giving great value to alpaca fiber products. 
There are 22 natural colors officially recognized for this wool, but in reality the intermediate shades are more than double; this variety allows you to have colored fibers without having to resort to dyes (natural or industrial), a very important characteristic in relation to the growing attention towards organic, natural and eco-sustainable products.
